Environmental Microbial Monitoring in Advancing Automation in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Robotic innovation meets sterility: Azzurra and BioCapt® AutoM set a new benchmark
May 22, 2025
On May 21, experts from Pharma Integration and Particle Measuring Systems came together for a focused webinar exploring how robotics is reshaping contamination control in aseptic pharmaceutical manufacturing.
At the heart of the conversation there was a key challenge: how to deliver safer, more efficient, and future-ready solutions as regulatory demands grow and the pharma industry continues to evolve.
Pharma Integration responded to this challenge with Azzurra — our fully robotic, gloveless, and humanless fill-finish system for Small-Volume Parenteral production. Designed to raise the bar for sterility, reliability, and efficiency, Azzurra represents a new generation of automation in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Rethinking Environmental Monitoring from the Ground Up
When designing Azzurra, we focused on solving key challenges at the core of the process. One of the most crucial areas was environmental monitoring. In traditional setups, EM still requires human intervention — a significant risk in aseptic environments.
That’s why Azzurra introduces a completely new approach to EM: one that is 100% managed by robots, with no operator involvement. This ensures unmatched process safety, repeatability, and contamination control.
The Innovation Behind Robotic EM
To make this possible, we needed to think outside the box. Active viable air sampling had to be redesigned with robotic accessibility in mind.
This led Pharma Integration and Particle Measuring Systems to co-develop a patented solution: the BioCapt® Single-Use AutoM. This plate is designed specifically for robotic manipulation.
- Single-use: the plate is placed before the decontamination cycle.
- Sealed design: it withstands VHP or water-based cleaning, enabling in-situ decontamination.
- Fully robotic handling: from start to finish, no human interaction required.
Another key component in Azzurra is the Robotic Rotor. This device enables multiple plates to be positioned at the same sampling point without manual intervention, preserving data integrity while simplifying sampling logistics.
Together, these innovations create a new standard in EM for high-risk pharmaceutical environments—enhancing both reliability and safety across the board.
The pharma industry is constantly evolving, and tackling its challenges means rethinking the way we do things. That’s exactly what happened when Pharma Integration and Particle Measuring Systems teamed up to develop the BioCapt® Single-Use AutoM—a unique solution that takes environmental monitoring to the next level. And it’s thanks to this breakthrough that advanced, fully robotic, gloveless systems like Azzurra are now possible—bringing a whole new standard of sterility, efficiency, and reliability to the fill-finish process.
